SYMPTOMS

When you click a link on a Web page in Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Cannot find <address>. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Web page's language is set to User Defined.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the Web page's language to a something other than User Defined. To do this, right-click the Web page, point to Language, and then click a command other than User Defined.


STATUS

This problem no longer occurs in Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1. To obtain Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1, please visit the following Microsoft Web site:

The western alphabet contains the default character set for English versions of Windows. The English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish languages use the western alphabet.

If you change the language to western alphabet, the default language may be set to User Defined when you restart Internet Explorer. To set the default language to western alphabet, follow these steps:

  1. Click Internet Options on the View menu.


  2. On the General tab, click Fonts.


  3. In the list of character sets, click Western, and then click Set As Default.


  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.
