ID: Q185035

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01, 5 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you try to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base on Microsoft's Web site (http:\\www.microsoft.com), you may receive the following error message:

File: the parameter is incorrect

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using a language that is incompatible with the Universal language code used by most major Internet sites.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, configure Internet Explorer to use a compatible language. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. In Internet Explorer 4, click Internet Options on the View menu. In Internet Explorer 5, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.

  2. Click Languages, click a compatible language, and then click Move Up until it is the first language listed.

NOTE: If no other language is listed, click Add, click a compatible language, and then click Move Up until it is the first language listed.

  3. Click OK, and then click OK again.

NOTE: Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If it is not, repeat steps 2-3, and select a different language.

MORE INFORMATION

Some Web servers are capable of displaying Web pages in one of several different languages. You can add and prioritize languages in Internet Explorer so that Web pages you load are always displayed using your preferred language. For example, a Web server can display a Web page using either the English or the Ukrainian language. If you specify that the Ukrainian language has a higher priority than the English language, Internet Explorer sends your preference to the Web server and the Web page is automatically displayed using the Ukrainian language.

For information about how to configure Internet Explorer to display Web pages using a different language, click Contents And Index on the Help menu in Internet Explorer, click the Index tab, type "viewing web" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "In a Different Language" topic.
