Thumbnail View Does Not Work for Certain .jpg Files

ID: Q191811

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to view graphics files in Thumbnail view or in Preview mode when you are viewing a folder as a Web page, certain Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG, or .jpg) files may not generate an image. However, these files do open correctly when you double-click them.

CAUSE

Typically .jpg files are encoded in a three-channel, RGB format. It is possible, in some programs, to create .jpg files that are encoded in four- channel, CMYK color format. Windows is unable to display .jpg files that are not in three-channel, RGB color format.
