Web Pages on Your Active Desktop Are Not Available Offline

ID: Q192122

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

You may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • If you configure your desktop to be displayed as a Web page and you add one or more Web pages to your desktop, the Web pages may not be displayed for several minutes after you log on but are offline.

  • If you have ActiveX content on your Active Desktop, the ActiveX content may not be displayed for several minutes after you log on but are offline. For example, if you have added the Microsoft Investor stock ticker to your Active Desktop, you may see the message "Downloading quotes" for several minutes before the quotes are loaded from the cache.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your Internet Explorer connection type is set to "Connect to the Internet using a local area network." When you use this setting, Internet Explorer waits several minutes for a local area network (LAN) connection before using the content from the cache.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, set Internet Explorer to connect to the Internet using a modem when you are not connected to the LAN. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, and then click Properties.

  2. On the Connection tab, click "Connect to the Internet using a modem," and then click Settings.

  3. In the "Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection" box, click the appropriate Dial-Up Networking connection for your Internet service provider (ISP).

  4. Type the appropriate user name and password in the User and Password boxes, click OK, and then click OK.

  5. Restart your computer

MORE INFORMATION

Setting Internet Explorer to work offline by clicking Work Offline on the File menu does not resolve this behavior. Also, creating a new hardware profile that does not contain a network adapter does not resolve this issue.
