SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to log on to a secure Web site using Internet Explorer 4.01 for Macintosh, you may receive the following error message:

Unable to establish a secure connection to <web page> failed. There is a problem with the security certificate from that site (the identity of the certificate issuer is unknown).

The information you view and send will be readable to others while in transit, and it may not go to the intended party.

If you click Continue, you receive the following error message:

Security failure. A secure connection could not be established.

When you attempt to log on to a secure Web site using Internet Explorer 4.0 for Macintosh, you may receive the following message in the browser window:

Insufficient encryption
This document requires a larger secret key size for encryption than your browser is capable of supporting.

CAUSE

You may receive either of these messages if the site requires 128-bit encryption and you are using 40-bit encryption.

RESOLUTION

Internet Explorer 4.01

To resolve this behavior, upgrade to the 128-bit version of Internet Explorer. To obtain the 128-bit Internet Explorer upgrade, please visit the following Microsoft Web site:
