Cannot Install More Than 16 Personal Certificates in Internet Explorer 4

SYMPTOMS

When you install personal certificates from a certificate server, you can install and use only 16. If you install a 17th certificate, all the certificates in your personal certificates list disappear, and the functionality for all the personal certificates is lost.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To work around this issue, use Registry Editor to delete personal certificates in the following registry key until there are only 16 (or fewer):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My\Certificates

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article.
