Internet Explorer 5 Prompts You to Open or Save Web Page

ID: Q221998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 98
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to load a Web page, you may be prompted to open or save the Web page. If you use an earlier version of Internet Explorer or a third-party browser to open the same Web page, you are not prompted to open or save it.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the server sends a content-disposition header with a value of "attachment."

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, click Open, and then click OK.

To resolve this behavior, contact the Web page author and request that the content-disposition header value be changed to "inline."

MORE INFORMATION

The content-disposition header is defined in Request for Comment (RFC) 1806. Internet Explorer 5 honors the "attachment" and "inline" values of the content-disposition header.

When the header is sent with the "attachment" value, Internet Explorer 5 prompts you to open or save the Web page.

When the header is sent with the "inline" value, Internet Explorer opens the Web page without prompting you.
