Netscape Communicator Is Not Available as an HTML Editor

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 98
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows NT 4.0


SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5, the "Edit with Netscape Navigator" option may be missing when you click Edit.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the registry key that specifies Netscape Navigator (or any other HTML editor) to be used is missing.


RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this issue, locate the following registry key in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe):

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList\Netscape Navigator\shell\edit\command
Verify that the (Default) value contains the following data value. If necessary, modify the value appropriately:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\Netscape.exe -edit %1
After you make this change, quit Registry Editor and start Internet Explorer again.
