SUMMARY

This article describes how to configure a computer so that the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) does not run when users log on to the computer for the first time.

MORE INFORMATION

To configure a computer so that the ICW does not run when users log on to the computer for the first time:

  1. Install Internet Explorer.

NOTE: To install Internet Explorer on a Windows NT 4.0-based computer, you must have administrative privileges on that computer.

  2. Using a text editor (such as Notepad), open the Ie4uinit.inf file in the Windows\System or %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

  3. Add the following line to the [AddReg.InetSettings] section of the Ie4uinit.inf file:

  4. HKCU,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard","Completed",1,01,00,00,00
NOTE: This line must be typed as a single line.

  5. Save and then close the Ie4uinit.inf file.

NOTE: This entry only works the first time a new user logs on. Changing the Ie4uinit.inf file affects all users (administrative and non-administrative) who log on to the computer. The Ie4uinit.inf file is installed by Internet Explorer.
