Err Msg: This Certificate Has Failed to Verify for All of Its Intended Purposes

SYMPTOMS

If you click on the padlock icon in Internet Explorer 5 to view the certificate when you are connected to a secure site, the dialog box that appears may contain the following error message:

This certificate has failed to verify for all of its intended purposes.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if Internet Explorer 5 interprets a specific object ID within the contents of some Server Gated Cryptography (SGC) certificates.


RESOLUTION

This issue effects the user interface only. Internet Explorer still communicates using the secure connection. If you click the Certificate Path tab in the same dialog box, This certificate is OK is displayed in the Certificate Status box.
