Cannot Type Text in Outlook Express or Internet Explorer

SYMPTOMS

When you try to type text in the message area of a new message in Outlook Express 5, you may not be able to, and the insertion point may not move. Also, you may not be able to type text in a search pane in Internet Explorer or another Internet browser program.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Mshtmler.dll file in the Windows\System folder is missing or damaged.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, extract the Mshtmler.dll file from the Ie_4.cab file on the Internet Explorer 5 CD-ROM into the Windows\System folder. For information about extracting files from the CD-ROM, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
