SYMPTOMS

When you start a connection in Dial-Up Networking, more than one phone number may be displayed in the Phone Number box (for example, the number that is displayed is 555-0100555-0199 when it should be 555-0189).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the software of some Internet service providers (ISPs) adds phone numbers to the Long Distance and Local Access boxes (in the To Access an Outside Line section of the dialing properties of the connection).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Modems.

  2. Click Dialing Properties.

  3. In the When dialing from here area, right-click the For local calls, dial box, click Select All, and then click Cut.

NOTE: If you want to save the file for future reference, open Notepad (or a similar program). On the Edit menu, click Paste, and then save the file.

  4. In the When dialing from here area, right-click the For Long Distance calls, dial box, click Select All, and then click Cut.

NOTE: If you want to save the file for future reference, open Notepad (or a similar program). On the Edit menu, click Paste, and then save the file.

  5. Type 9 (or another appropriate number if the modem does not connect through a residential phone line), click Apply, and then click OK.

  6. Quit the Modems tool, and then connect normally to your ISP.

MORE INFORMATION

The software of some ISPs is configured to add phone numbers in the dialing properties to make dialing the ISP easier.
