SUMMARY

Microsoft has made an update available that addresses a potential misinterpretation of date information in Outlook Express. When you receive an Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) e-mail message or a news message with a 2-digit year as the "sent" date, the date may be misinterpreted. Additional information about this issue is available from the following Microsoft Web site:

If the sent date includes a two-digit year that is anything other than 99, Outlook Express uses the current century value. For example, if the current year is 2000 and you receive a message using the two-digit year 97, Outlook Express interprets the sent date as 2097. However, if you receive the two-digit year 99 and the current year is a multiple of 100 (for example, 2000), the year is interpreted as the current year plus 98 (for example, 2098).

Note that this issue does not affect message contents. Also, this issue is most noticeable when you sort news or e-mail messages in your Inbox by date.

Fixes are available for 2 versions of the 16-bit versions of Outlook Express:

Determine what version of Outlook Express you are using:
1. Start Outlook Express, and then click About Microsoft Outlook Express on the Help menu.
2. Note the version number listed beneath the words "Outlook Express", and then quit Outlook Express. If the version number is 4.01.212 digits, use the update Q237823.exe. If the version number is 5.00.0913.4 digits, use the update Q237824.exe. If the version number is 4.0.182 digits.1 digit, you should upgrade to Outlook Express 4.01 or 5, and then use the appropriate update for the version you select.

Obtain the appropriate update, and then apply the update to your computer:
1. Run the update (Q237823.exe) from File Manager to extract the Msoert16.dll, Icomm16.dll, and Readme.txt files.
2. Quit all open programs, and then verify the location of the existing Msoert16.dll and Icomm16.dll files. Note that they are typically located in the Winnt\System or Windows\System folders.
  
  NOTE: Back up these files before proceeding.
3. Copy the new Msoert16.dll and Icomm16.dll files provided in this update to the location noted in step 3, overwriting the older version.
4. Restart your computer.

To view the dates properly after applying the fix it may be necessary to flush the Outlook Explorer cache and then resubscribe to the newsgroup. To unsubscribe to the newsgroups you have already subscribed:

In Outlook Express, click Newsgroups on the Tools menu, click the Subscribed tab, and then note the names of all subscribed newsgroups for use later.

Unsubscribe to all newsgroups, quit Outlook Express, and then restart your computer.

Start Outlook Express, and then subscribe to the newsgroups you noted in step 1.
