SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5, the Windows Update Web site may not download add-on components in English.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of either of the following reasons:

  • The locale is reset during the installation of Internet Explorer.

  • An additional language (other than English) is installed as the default language.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method.

Method 1: Change the Default Language Setting

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Keyboard.

  2. On the Language tab, click English, and then click Set as Default.

  3. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Method 2: Modify the Registry to Set Downloads Back to English

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

  2. Locate the following registry key:

  3. HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\International
