Error Message: Unable to Establish a Secure Connection to <Site>

ID: Q245749

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.01, 4.5 for Macintosh

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to a secure Web site, which is using a Thawte certificate, you may receive the following warning that the certificate has expired:

Unable to Establish a secure connection to Site. There is a problem with the security certificate from that site. (The identity certificate has expired.)

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the server sends its own valid certificate and its expired Certificate Authority (CA) certificate. Internet Explorer checks the certificates and finds that the CA certificate has expired, so it rejects the certificate. Internet Explorer does not look for additional CA certificates that may have a valid date range.

This issue has been reported only with Thawte certificates.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
