RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this issue:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

  2. Locate the following registry key:

  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
  4. Export the Winsock2 key for backup purposes, and then delete the Winsock2 key by clicking it and then pressing DELETE. Confirm that you want to delete the key, and then quit Registry Editor.

  5. Uninstall Dial-Up Networking:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.

    2. Click the Windows Setup tab.

    3. Click Communications, click Details, and then click to clear the Dial-Up Networking check box.

    4. Click OK, and then click OK.

  6. After you uninstall Dial-Up Networking, restart the computer.

  7. Reinstall Dial-Up Networking:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.

    2. Click the Windows Setup tab.

    3. Click Communications, click Details, and then click to select the Dial-Up Networking check box.

    4. Click OK, and then click OK.
