Protected Storage Fails to Start

SYMPTOMS

After updating from Internet Explorer 4.01 to Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2, you may receive the following error messages in the event viewer:

Event ID: 7000
Source: Service Control Manager

The Protected Storage service failed to start due to the following
error: The system cannot find the path specified.

The Certificate Authority service depends on the Protected Storage

CAUSE

After you restart Microsoft Internet Explorer for the second time during setup, the user logged in using an administrator account is different from the one used to start Internet Explorer Setup.


RESOLUTION

Uninstall the service pack and then install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 again. Use the same administrator account during setup until Internet Explorer has finished installation.
