Error Message: An ActiveX Control on this Page Is Not Safe

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to a Web page, you may receive the following error message:

An ActiveX control on this page is not safe. Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly.


CAUSE

This error message can occur if the computer contains the following file in the %systemroot%\System32 folder:

Name: Comcat.dll
Version: 5.0
Size: 6 kilobytes


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Copy or extract the Comcat.dll file version 4.71 from one of the following sources:


    • Another computer running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 CD-ROM.
    • Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 CD-ROM.


  2. Paste the Comcat.dll file version 4.71 into the %systemroot%\System32 folder.


  3. Type the following command at a command prompt to register the Comcat.dll file again:


  4. regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\comcat.dll
