SYMPTOMSThe Word 6.0 for Windows Converter Kit Setup program proposes an incorrect directory location for installation of the MSWORD6.CNV converter file. If Word 6.0 is installed on your computer, the Setup program will always propose the Word 6.0 directory. If only Word 2.0 is installed, Setup will always propose C:\WINWORD regardless of the actual location of your Word 2.0 directory. Setup should actually be proposing installation in your <Windows>\MSAPPS\TEXTCONV directory (where <Windows> is the location of your Windows program directory). STATUSMicrosoft has identified this as a problem in the Setup program supplied with the Word 6.0 for Windows Converter Kit. This problem was fixed in a later version of the Microsoft Word for Windows Converter Kit. WORKAROUNDEven though Setup proposes the wrong directory location, choose OK to continue installation. MSWORD6.CNV will be properly installed in the <Windows>\MSAPPS\TEXTCONV shared converter directory and will be properly registered in the Word 2.0 [MSWord Text Converters] section of the WIN.INI file. Essentially, the fact that Setup proposes the wrong directory location is harmless. MORE INFORMATION
If Word 6.0 is installed on your computer, the Setup log file W6_SETUP.STF
will be added to your Word 6.0 directory. If only Word 2.0 is installed, a
C:\WINWORD directory will be created if it does not already exist, and
W6_SETUP.STF will be placed in this directory. This file provides the
information needed by Setup to remove an installation of the Word 6.0
converter and can be safely removed if you do not plan to run Setup again.
