Windows NT TCP/IP Server Freezes

ID: q108255

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

A Windows NT server configured with the TCP/IP may have no CapsLock or NumLock activity.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the computer runs out of memory and IP overwrites the default gateway in the routing table when it can't allocate a new entry. This causes an infinite loop when certain destinations are looked up in the table.

This condition may also arise if the default gateway was deleted and one of those destinations was looked up.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem was corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server.
