Setup Doesn't Recognize CD-ROM Disc

ID: q109990

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

Setup doesn't recognize the installation CD-ROM disc. When you insert the CD, the system beeps and redisplays the prompt to insert the CD.

CAUSE

SETUP.EXE can be used to create a Master Files directory on a server for network installation of additional Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server systems. The SETUP command switch for the source drive can indicate either a CD or a floppy disk. If the system was originally installed using the CD-ROM installation, the FILELIST.INF file contains pointers to CD-ROM locations of files. Executing "SETUP -n -i initial.inf -s a:\ -d X:\PATH" at the command line causes the system to prompt "Insert the Windows NT Setup CD-ROM disc into drive A:" When you insert the SETUP CD for CD-ROM installation, the system beeps and the prompt is redisplayed.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, replace the FILELIST.INF file with one that has pointers to the floppy disk locations of files, rather than the CD-ROM location. Expand FILELIST.IN_ from Disk 4 of the floppy installation set into %systemroot%\SYSTEM32\FILELIST.INF and re-run the SETUP command.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
