Err Msg: Cannot Update File...with FoxPro

ID: q110623

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Microsoft FoxPro and open files with the NOUPDATE flag enabled, the following error message may occur:

Cannot update file.
This error message occurs when you are using a Windows for Workgroups workstation and you attempt to open files on a Windows NT server.

CAUSE

The cause of this problem is that Windows NT handles the SMBFlush command differently than the MS-DOS specification.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

  • Don't "USE" files with the "NOUPDATE" flag enabled.

  • Run the BASIC redirector with Windows for Workgroups.

  • Use LAN Manager 2.x or Windows NT or Windows NT Advanced Server redirectors.

  • Use LAN Manager 2.x servers or Windows for Workgroups server shares.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
