WD: Cannot Remove or Delete Font After Running Mac Word Setup

ID: q120101

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1

SYMPTOMS

After you run Setup to install Word for the Macintosh, the System may be unable to delete or remove the fonts you installed. If you try to delete a font, the following error message may occur:

An unexpected error of type -39 occurred.

CAUSE

You canceled or otherwise interrupted Setup while it was listing a font name. As a result, this font file is damaged and has a file size of 0 (zero) kilobytes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

  1. In the System folder, rename the Fonts folder to a different name. For example, change the name to "Fonts Temp".

  2. Restart your computer so the System will create a new Fonts folder.

  3. Open the renamed Fonts folder (in the above example, open the "Fonts Temp" folder). Delete the corrupt fonts (these fonts have a file size of 0 kilobytes).

  4. Close the renamed ("Fonts Temp") folder.

  5. Rename the "Fonts Temp" folder back to "Fonts" and use this folder to replace the new one that was created in the System folder when you restarted your computer.
