WD6: Drag-and-Drop Pointer Does Not Change to Prohibit Pointer

• Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1

SYMPTOMS

In Word for the Macintosh, the drag-and-drop mouse pointer may not change to a prohibit pointer (a slashed circle) when you drag into an area where you cannot drop text.

CAUSE

The Microsoft OLE Extension file was not in the System:Extensions folder when you started your Macintosh.

-or-

You started your Macintosh with extensions off (by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key and then starting your computer).

NOTE: The drag-and-drop pointer never changes to a prohibit icon in Word 5.0 or 5.1 for the Macintosh when you drag into an area where you cannot drop text.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

Make sure the Microsoft OLE Extension file is located in your System:Extensions folder and that extensions are turned on when you run Word.

NOTE: Sometimes the mouse pointer fails to change to a prohibit pointer even when the Microsoft OLE Extension file is loaded correctly.
