WD98: How to Install and Use the Word Batch Converter

SUMMARY
Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition includes a batch converter that allows
you to convert multiple files from Word file format to another format, and
vice versa. The batch converter is installed in the following folder:
Macintosh HD:Microsoft Office 98:Shared Applications:Text Converters
This article describes how to install and use the Batch Converter.
MORE INFORMATIONInstalling the Batch Converter
The Batch Converter is installed from the Value Pack located on your
Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition CD-ROM.
NOTE: The Batch Converter is not installed during Microsoft Office Setup,
and has to be set up separately.
To install the Batch Converter, follow these steps:
- Insert the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition CD-ROM into your
CD-ROM drive.
- Double-click the Value Pack Installer icon in the Value Pack folder of
the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition CD-ROM.
- In the Value Pack Installer options, click to select the Text Converters
check box.
Selecting this check box automatically selects the Batch Converter and
all the supplemental text converters.
NOTE: To select individual text converters, expand the Text Converters
option and click the text converters you want to install.
- Click Install.
Running The Batch Converter
The Batch Converter is a separate program from Word. To run the Batch
Converter, follow these steps:
- Double-click the Batch Converter icon in the following folder:
Macintosh HD:Microsoft Office 98:Shared Applications:Text Converters
When the Batch Converter starts, you will see a menu bar that contains
File, Edit and Help menus.
- On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
The Batch Converter Preferences dialog box opens.
- Under Convert documents, do both of the following:
- Change the From box to the file format that you are converting
documents from, or leave the box selected as All Readable Files.
- Change the To box to the file format that you want to convert the
documents to.

- Under Converter Folders, click to select one of the following
options:
- Same As Batch Converter
Use this option to use the text converters that have been installed
in the same folder as the Batch Converter.
-or-
- Use Text Converters
Use this option when you want to use text converters that are
stored in a different folder from the Batch Converter.
NOTE: When you click either of these options, the Batch Converter
scans for the installed text converters available. If you click
Select, you can change to a different folder that contains installed
text converters.
- Under Destination Folder, click to select one of the following
options:
- Same As Batch Converter
Use this option to save the converted file to the same folder
as the Batch Converter.
-or-
- Same As Original
Use this option to save the converted file to the same folder as
the original file.
-or-
- Prompt For Destination
Use this option to allow the Batch Converter to prompt you for the
folder to save the converted files in.
-or-
- Use: <folder name>
Use this option to select the folder the Batch Converter will use
to save the converted files.
- Click to select the "Delete original files after conversion" check box
if appropriate.
NOTE: Selecting this option will delete the original file. Use this
option only if you are sure you will not need the original file
again.
- Use either of the following methods:
Click OK to save the preferences you have selected for the Batch
Converter.
-or-
Click Cancel to exit the Batch Converter Preferences without saving
the changes you have selected.
- On the File menu, click Convert.
- Click to select the file or folder to be converted, and then click
Select.
NOTE: You must specify a folder name for files to convert from. The
Batch Converter will not respond to files located at the root of the
Hard Drive.
The Batch Converter now converts the files according to the Batch Converter
Preferences.
