WD98: Errors Initializing Visual Basic Editor

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start the Visual Basic for Applications Editor, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:

Could not open macro storage.
-or-
The Visual Basic Environment could not be initialized. Please run Setup to install it correctly.
-or-
<Application> could not fire event.
where <Application> is Word.


CAUSE

These error messages may occur if any of the following are true:

  • You have insufficient disk space or low memory. (This is the most common cause.)

    -or-


  • The default Normal template file is corrupted.

    -or-


  • The Visual Basic for Applications Library file is corrupted, missing or an incorrect version.

    -or-


  • The Word Settings (8) preference file is corrupted.



RESOLUTION

To prevent these errors, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Rename the Default Normal Template

  1. If Word is running, close it.


  2. Find the Normal template file. By default, this file is located in the <Macintosh HD:Microsoft Office 98:Templates folder.


  3. Select the Normal template file.


  4. Rename the file. For example, rename it Normal Old.


If you still experience the symptoms described in the Symptoms section of this article, repeat steps 1 through 4 and then use one of the remaining methods.

Method 2: Rename and Reinstall Visual Basic for Applications Library File

  1. If you have any programs running, close them.


  2. Find the Visual Basic for Applications file. By default, this file is located in the Macintosh HD:Microsoft Office 98:Office folder.


  3. Select the Visual Basic for Applications Library file.


  4. Rename the file. For example, rename it to Visual Basic for Applications Library Old.


  5. Reinstall Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition or the stand alone version of the Office 98 Macintosh Edition product you are using. For example, Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.


Method 3: Remove the Word Settings (8) Preference File

You can move the Word Settings (8) preference to the trash can. When you restart Word, the preference file will be rebuilt.

  1. If Word is running, close it.


  2. Find the Macintosh HD:System:Preferences folder.


  3. Select the Word Settings (8) file.


  4. On the File menu, click Move To Trash.


  5. Restart Word.


Method 4: Insufficient Disk Space or Memory

If you have insufficient disk space or memory, do one of the following:

  • Add more RAM to your computer.

    NOTE: You can temporarily increase the amount of memory available to Word by closing programs that you do not need to have running.


  • Increase your hard disk space. For example, add a larger hard disk or remove files that you no longer need to store on your hard disk.


  • Restart your computer.


  • Uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition.
