After you merge Word Settings (5) to Word 6.x for the Macintosh, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • Line Numbering is turned on for all new documents and starts at 2 instead of 1.

  • When you remove pre-assigned keystrokes from the Customize dialog box, you may encounter the following error message:
Word cannot change the function of the specified key.
Following this message, the keystroke is still available and is not removed.

NOTE: There may be other possible causes for the symptoms described above.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word versions 6.0 and 6.01 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate method for your situation.

Method 1: To revolve the line numbering problem:

  1. On the File menu, click Document Layout.

  2. Select the Layout tab.

  3. Click Line Numbering.

  4. Clear Line Numbering, and click OK.

  5. Click Default to change the settings in the current template for all new documents.

To be able to remove any keystroke after merging settings, you can reset all of the current keystrokes. In doing so, any existing custom keystrokes are also reset to the original Word 6.x defaults. If you want to continue and remove all of the custom keystrokes, use these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.

  2. Select the Keyboard tab.

  3. Click Reset All.

  4. When you receive the "Are you sure you want to reset key assignments?" prompt, click Yes.

Any Word default keystrokes and new custom keystrokes can now be removed.
