NetShow Theater Server Supported ATM Network Interface Cards

ID: Q175558

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft NetShow Theater Server version 3.0

SUMMARY

NetShow Theater Server supports the following ATM network interface cards (NICs).

MORE INFORMATION

ATM LANE (LAN Emulation): Please note that running ATM LANE does not normally provide you with an ATM Quality of Service (QOS) and does not normally use the Theater Server multi point-to- point (MP2P) virtual circuit (VC).

Theater Server: On a Theater Server running ATM LANE, you can use any industry-standard, server-class ATM NIC.

Microsoft Media Player Client: On the client, any ATM LANE NIC that meets industry standards is fine.

ATM CLIP (Classical IP): Running ATM CLIP provides the ATM guaranteed QOS and uses the MP2P VC.

Theater Server: ATM CLIP on Theater Server is only supported on the FORE 200E adapter when using the specific drivers that are included with the Theater Server media. When using ATM CLIP on Theater Server, the NIC driver has to be an NDIS 5.0 miniport driver that has been recompiled to run in Windows NT 4.0. The FORE 200E is the only ATM CLIP server side driver currently shipping on the Theater Server media. Check the Theater Server Web page http://www.microsoft.com/theater/ for any additional cards that may be added to this list.

Microsoft Media Player Client: On the client side, in theory any ATM NIC that supports CLIP should work. However, in practice, every NIC does not work. Microsoft has tested several major vendors NICs and found them to work.(Note that you may have to contact these vendors to obtain the latest drivers that provide support for multiple incoming VCs on CLIP.) Some other adapters Microsoft tested did not work. The reason is that the client NIC has to support two incoming VCs from the same server: one for data traffic and one for video traffic. Some ATM NICs only support a single incoming VC from each destination and therefore do not work with NTS. Please check with your ATM NIC vendor to verify that multiple incoming VCs are supported when running CLIP. Note that the client ATM NIC does not need to do anything special for MP2P, because the incoming video VC appears to the client as an ordinary point-to-point VC.
