NetShow Log Files Do Not Roll Over after Changing to Daily

ID: Q189364

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server NetShow 3.0 Services

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

After you set the NetShow Unicast logging to create a new log file daily, weekly, or monthly, the change does not appear to take effect.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when the logging properties of the NetShow Unicast server were previously set to create a new log file after reaching a certain size, and then later changed to create a new log file on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

It appears that the NetShow Administrator fails to reset the registry entry that imposes the file size limit on the log file.

WORKAROUND

This issue can be corrected by using the following steps to modify the registry:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. Click Start, point to Run, and type Regedit. Click OK to open the Registry Editor.

  2. Locate the following key in the Windows NT registry:

    \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\Services\NSUNICAST\Parameters

  3. Double-click the value labeled LogFilePeriod located in the above key.

  4. Change this value so that it is equal to 0 (zero).

  5. Close the Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT Server NetShow 3.0 Services.

MORE INFORMATION

The LogFilePeriod value in the registry controls the size limit in kilobytes that the NetShow Unicast server imposes on its log files. By default, this value is set to zero, which indicates that there is to be no limit. If you use the NetShow Administrator to specify that you want the NetShow Unicast logs to be limited by file size, this value is modified to the appropriate value that you specify in the Administrator program. If you later go back and use the Administrator to indicate that you want new logs to be created on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, then this key should be reset to zero by the administrator.
