Err Msg: You Do Not Have Access Rights To Administer The Server

ID: Q190014

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft NetShow version 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server NetShow 3.0 Services

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to the NetShow Encoder the following error message is returned:

Failed to connect to all NetShow services on server '<Server
Name>'.
Either you do not have access rights to administer the server, NetShow
services are not currently running, or NetShow has not been installed
   on this server.

CAUSE

This error can occur when the user account does not have sufficient security rights on the NetShow server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, confirm that the following is true.

If both the server and the computer that you are performing remote administration from are in the same domain:

  • Verify that you are logging on to the Administrator computer with a valid domain account.

  • Verify that the domain account that you are using is a member of the NetShow Administrators group.

If both the server and the computer that you are performing remote administration from are in workgroups and not domains:
  • Verify that you are logging on to the Administrator computer with credentials that match a local account on the Windows NT server running the NetShow services.

  • Verify that the account that you are using is a member of the NetShow Administrators group.

If one computer is participating in a domain, and the other computer is not participating in a domain:
  • Verify that the account you are logging into on the Administrator computer is a local account and uses the same username and password as the local account on the Windows NT server running the NetShow services.

  • Verify that the account that you are using is a member of the NetShow Administrator's group.

MORE INFORMATION

When administering a NetShow server, the administrator uses NTLM to authenticate itself to the NetShow server using the credentials you are currently logged in with. The NetShow Administrator authentication occurs transparently; as a result, you will not be prompted for a username and password.
