SYMPTOMSWhen you use the Windows NT Performance Data Helper API to retrieve counter information, no data is returned by the NetShow Station Service and NetShow Unicast Service performance counters. CAUSEA performance extension is expected to set the NumInstances member of the PERF_OBJECT_TYPE structure to -1 when the concerned performance object does not support multiple instances. The extension for the perf object called NetShow Unicast Service appears to set NumInstances to 0 instead. This causes the Windows NT Performance Data Helper API to assume that the object supports instances, but does not have any current instances. Therefore, no data is returned. RESOLUTION
A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from
Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied
only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not
severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you
wait for the next Windows NT service pack.
