SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Windows 98 and use the Windows Media Encoder to encode a file that has more than 50 characters for the file name, the encoder stops responding with an error similar to the following:

NSREX caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:686a6b6c.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, rename the source file to a name that has less than 50 characters.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Services version 4.0.
