SYMPTOMS

When using the Windows Media Encoder to live encode a file and send the stream to a Windows Media Server, you may occasionally hear skips in the audio.

WORKAROUND

Do not use the encoder to stream an .avi, .wav, or .mp3 file directly to a server for a live stream. Instead, first convert the file into an .asf file with the encoder, and then place the .asf file on the Windows Media Server to be streamed "live."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Services version 4.0.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur when the encoder has a live source, such as a video capture card or sound card. It also does not happen when converting a media file directly into an .asf file.
