SYMPTOMS
Windows Media Player clients are sometimes unable to complete User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packet pair measurements when connected using the Microsoft WinSock Proxy Client over modem or Ethernet connections to servers on the Internet. Packet pairs fail, but the client is able to stream the UDP unicast stream with very few lost packets. Netmon analysis shows that the client only receives one packet of the packet pair. CAUSEThis is a known issue with UDP packet pairs and Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0. WORKAROUNDInstead of using UDP to stream content with the mmsu:// protocol, use Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) with the mmst:// protocol. Note that this may affect performance of the server, and clients may experience more buffering of streamed content than normal. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Services version 4.0. Additional query words: netshow
