Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition to Windows 2000 Upgrade Causes Windows Media Setup Problems

ID: Q244228

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows Media Services version 4.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft NetShow On-Demand Server Service does not start after you upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition to Windows 2000 Advanced Server. This problem occurs only on the network Domain Controller.

CAUSE

During the Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition upgrade, you are asked which components you want to upgrade. If you select to upgrade Internet Information Server, NetShow 1.0 is also installed. If you upgrade to Windows 2000 Advanced Server, because NetShow 1.0 is not compliant with Windows 2000, the NetShow services fail to start and the Windows Media Services 4.0 upgrade cannot complete.

WORKAROUND

Before you upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition to Windows 2000 Advanced Server, uninstall NetShow 1.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition installs Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3, which in turn installs NetShow 1.0 when you specify that you want to install Internet Information Server.
