ACC2000: AutoNumber and Identity Fields Do Not Contain "(AutoNumber)" When Adding New Records to a Page

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and a Microsoft Access project (.adp).


SYMPTOMS

When you move to a new record on a data access page, (AutoNumber) does not automatically appear in AutoNumber and Identity fields.


MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Access automatically puts a number into this field when you save the record. You cannot select this field and type a number that could affect the integrity of your data.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

CAUTION: Following the steps in this example will modify the sample database Northwind.mdb. You may want to back up the Northwind.mdb file and perform these steps on a copy of the database.

  1. Open the sample database Northwind.mdb.


  2. In the Database window, click Pages under Objects, and then click New.


  3. In the New Data Access Page dialog box, click Page Wizard. Click OK.


  4. In the Tables/Queries list, click Categories. Move CategoryID and CategoryName from the Available Fields list to the Selected Fields list. Click Finish.


  5. On the View menu, click Page View.


  6. Click the new record button on the record navigation control.

    Note that CategoryID does not contain (AutoNumber).
