ACC2000: "Group by Table" Button Unavailable on Data Access Pages Built with Page Wizard

ID: Q236879

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Access 2000

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Page Wizard to add fields to a data access page, the Group by Table button will not be available.

RESOLUTION

The Group by Table command is available only if you manually add fields from the Field List box to the page. After you use the Page Wizard to build the page, even if grouping is not added at that time, you must group the page by using the Promote button.

For more information about how to create a group on a page, click Microsoft Access Help on the Help menu, type group records on a data access page in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

MORE INFORMATION

The Group by Table command creates a new group based on the currently selected control, moving that field and any other field belonging to the same table or query into the new group. This is the preferred method of creating a group if you want all associated controls moved as well.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Open the sample database Northwind.mdb.

  2. In the Database window, click Pages under Objects, and then click New.

  3. In the New Data Access Page dialog box, click Page Wizard.

  4. In the Choose the table or query where the object's data comes from list, click Customers, and then click OK.

  5. For the Customers table, move the CustomerID and CompanyName fields from the Available Fields list to the Selected Fields list by clicking the fields, and then clicking the > button.

  6. In the Tables/Queries list, click Table: Orders and move the OrderID and Freight fields from the Available Fields list to the Selected Fields list by clicking the fields, and then clicking the > button.

  7. Click Finish.

  8. In Design view of the page that you just created, note that the Group by Table button on the Page Design toolbar is not available.
