ACC95: IPF in Kernel32.dll When You Close any Database

ID: Q245490

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Access 7.0

Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Access for Windows 95 (version 7.0), if you open a database from a shortcut or from Windows Explorer, and then close it, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the following message appears:
MSACCESS caused an invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL at 0137:bff9a28c.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

  • You are using Access 7.0 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95.
  • Your computer has Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 installed.
  • Your computer has Microsoft Office Converter Pack installed, including Image Filters (32-bit).

RESOLUTION

This behavior occurs specifically when the Image Filters (32-bit) component of Microsoft Office Converter Pack is installed. To resolve the behavior, you must remove Microsoft Office Converter Pack and reinstall it without the image filters. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start Menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  3. Click Microsoft Office Converter Pack, and then click Add/Remove to remove the Microsoft Office Converter Pack components.

  4. Rerun the Microsoft Office Converter Pack Setup program, Convpack.exe. If you no longer have a copy of the Setup program, you can download it from the following Microsoft Web site:

  5. http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/appndx/toolbox.htm
  6. On the Components screen of Microsoft Office Converter Pack Setup, click to clear the Image Filters (32-bit) check box, and then click Next to complete the installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior occurs only with Access 7.0 running on Windows 95. It does not occur with any other version of Access running on any other version of Windows.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. On a clean Windows 95 computer (a computer that has a newly installed version of Windows 95, and no other applications), install Internet Explorer 4.0.

NOTE: You do not have to install the desktop update.

  2. Perform a typical installation of Microsoft Office for Windows 95, Professional Edition.

  3. Install Microsoft Office Converter Pack. For more information about Microsoft Office Converter Pack, see the "References" section later in this article.

  4. In Windows Explorer, locate the Msoffice\Access\Samples folder.

  5. Double-click the Northwind.mdb file. Note that Northwind.mdb opens in Access 7.0.

  6. With Northwind.mdb open, click Exit on the File menu.

Note that you receive the error message mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
