XL: International Settings Not Updated Automatically

ID: Q105449

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SUMMARY

Changes you make to the International settings in the Microsoft Windows Control Panel will not be reflected in the Module General tab of the Options dialog box (from the Tools menu, choose Options) until you change the Language/Country setting to English/(Custom).

This is by design of Microsoft Excel.

To use modified international settings in Microsoft Excel, do the following:

  1. In Microsoft Excel, choose Options from the Tools menu.

  2. In the Options dialog box, select the Module General tab.

  3. Under International, select English/(Custom) from the Language/Country list.

  4. Choose OK.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Windows, you can change settings such as the standard list separator character, currency character, currency number formats, number formats, and date/time formats by using the International dialog box in Microsoft Windows Control Panel. Changes that you make are used in most applications that run in Microsoft Windows, including Microsoft Excel.

However, Microsoft Excel assumes by default that you wish to use the standard English/United States settings, even if you make changes to the International settings in Control Panel.
