XL5: Can't Sign Out of Microsoft Mail After Routing Document

SUMMARY
If you route a document from Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0 by
choosing the Add Routing Slip command on the File menu, you may receive an
error message if you choose the Exit And Sign Out command in Microsoft Mail
before you close Microsoft Excel.
NOTE: Only the Exit And Sign Out command produces the error message. You
can choose the Exit command in Microsoft Mail without receiving an error
message.
MORE INFORMATION
This error message occurs because, when you route a document, Microsoft
Excel links to the dynamic link libraries (DLLs) used by Microsoft Mail to
send and receive messages. Microsoft Excel retains the link to the MS Mail
DLLs until you do either of the following:
- In Microsoft Excel, choose Exit from the File menu: when you use the
Exit command in Microsoft Excel, you will be able to use the Exit And
Sign Out command in MS Mail.
-or-
- Use the Visual Basic Application.MailLogoff macro command to
force Microsoft Excel to disconnect from the MS Mail DLLs.
NOTE: If you use this command when you have not routed a document or
otherwise connected Microsoft Excel to MS Mail, you will receive the
error message

Steps to Reproduce Behavior
- In a new worksheet in a new workbook, enter the following values:
A1: Alpha
A2: Bravo
A3: Charlie
- Save the workbook as ROUTED.XLS.
- From the File menu, choose Add Routing Slip.
- In the Routing Slip dialog box, choose Address.
- Enter your electronic mail name in the To box. Choose OK.
- Choose the Add Slip button.
- As soon as the Routing Slip dialog box disappears, switch to the
Microsoft Mail application.
- From the File menu, choose the Exit And Sign Out command.
You will receive the following error message
Another application has denied your request.
and Microsoft Mail will not sign out properly.
