XL5: GPF Editing Word Object Linked to Embedded Word Object

ID: Q109574

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

If you link information from a Microsoft Word document object embedded in a Microsoft Excel worksheet to another worksheet, one of the following occurs:

  • A general protection (GP) fault occurs when you edit this linked information. You also receive a GP fault in Microsoft Word for Windows when you exit Microsoft Windows as a result of this problem.

  • -or-

  • The linked object is blank, and the following error message appears when you edit this linked object: Cannot start the source application for this object This second symptom occurs if you have used a workbook autotemplate (BOOK.XLT) to create the workbook that contains the linked information.

WORKAROUND

SYMPTOM 1

To link information from an embedded Microsoft Word document object to a worksheet in Microsoft Excel without receiving the GP fault, link the information to the worksheet that contains the embedded object. The error only occurs when information is linked from an embedded Microsoft Word document object on one worksheet to another worksheet.

SYMPTOM 2

When the XLSTART directory contains a workbook autotemplate, you cannot link information from an embedded Microsoft Word document object to a worksheet in Microsoft Excel without receiving the error message above. You can, however, use the Paste option in the Paste Link dialog box, to insert the information as an embedded object, text or a picture.
