XL5: Excel 5.0 CBT Is Not Installed Under OS/2
ID: Q113147
|
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0
-
Microsoft Windows 3.1
-
IBM OS/2 versions 2.0, 2.1
SUMMARY
When you install Microsoft Excel version 5.0 under the OS/2 operating
system, the Microsoft Excel Setup program will not install the CBT
(computer based training) or tutorial.
CAUSE
Specific components of the CBT involve automated cursor movements and
special window effects. These functions will operate correctly under the
Windows operating environment, but cannot be guaranteed to operate
correctly in the IBM OS/2. Therefore, the Microsoft Excel version 5.0 Setup
program detects the operating environment, and will only install the CBT
under Microsoft Windows.
WORKAROUND
To install the CBT files, you can decompress them from the Microsoft Excel
version 5.0 disks to an EXCELCBT directory.
Once the CBT files are installed, you can run it in a full screen session
of OS/2 (you cannot, however, run it in an OS/2 window).
For more information about how to run and install the CBT files under OS/2,
see the "More Information" section of this article below.
MORE INFORMATION
The CBT can be run under IBM OS/2 while Microsoft Excel version 5.0 is
running in a full-screen WIN-OS/2 session. If you attempt to run the CBT in
a WIN-OS/2 window the CBT may fail and cause the machine to hang.
To configure Microsoft Excel version 5.0 to run as a full screen
application, follow these steps:
- In the OS/2 Desktop, locate the Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for
Windows icon.
- With the mouse pointer on the Microsoft Excel version 5.0 icon,
press the right mouse button to display the pop-menu for the icon.
- From the menu, click the arrow directly to the right of the Open
option, and then choose Settings.
- Select the Session tab to display the session options.
- Select the WIN-OS/2 Full Screen option.
- Close the Settings window by double-clicking the Close button in
the upper-left corner of the Settings window.
Before the CBT can be run, it must be installed manually to an
EXCELCBT directory. To install the CBT, follow these steps:
NOTE: The commands below assume that Microsoft Excel is installed on your C
drive in the EXCEL directory. If this is not the case, modify each of the
given commands to the appropriate drive and directory in which Microsoft
Excel for Windows is installed.
- At the MS-DOS or OS/2 prompt, change to the EXCEL program directory.
For example, type:
c:
cd\excel
- Use the MS-DOS MD command to create a directory called EXCELCBT. For
example, type:
md excelcbt
- Insert the Microsoft Excel version 5.0 Setup Disk 1 into your computer's
floppy disk drive (in the steps below, this is drive A).
- Copy DECOMP.EXE to the EXCEL program directory. For
example, type:
copy a:\decomp.exe c:\excel
- Make sure the Microsoft Excel version 5.0 Setup Disk 1 is still in
drive A.
- Type the following MS-DOS commands
decomp a:\xlcbt.de_ c:\excel\excelcbt\xlcbt.dex
decomp a:\quickprv.cb_ c:\excel\excelcbt\quickprv.cbt
- Insert the Microsoft Excel version 5.0 Setup Disk 8 into drive A. Or,
if you installed Microsoft Excel from Microsoft Office version 4.2,
insert the disk number listed in the first column in step 8 below.
- Type the following MS-DOS commands:
3 decomp a:\93sales.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\93sales.xls
3 decomp a:\accounts.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\accounts.xls
3 decomp a:\analysis.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\analysis.xls
3 decomp a:\art.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\art.xls
3 decomp a:\budget.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\budget.xls
15 decomp a:\cbtlib4.dl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\cbtlib4.dll
3 decomp a:\chart.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\chart.xls
3 decomp a:\chart2.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\chart2.xls
3 decomp a:\excelcbt.cb_ c:\excel\excelcbt\excelcbt.cbt
8 decomp a:\excelles.cb_ c:\excel\excelcbt\excelles.cbt
2 decomp a:\exotic.fm_ c:\excel\excelcbt\exotic.fmt
3 decomp a:\exotic.wk_ c:\excel\excelcbt\exotic.wk1
4 decomp a:\home.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\home.xls
3 decomp a:\parts.wk_ c:\excel\excelcbt\parts.wk1
3 decomp a:\parts.fm_ c:\excel\excelcbt\parts.fmt
4 decomp a:\products.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\products.xls
4 decomp a:\qtrsales.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\qtrsales.xls
2 decomp a:\sales.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\sales.xls
3 decomp a:\schedule.wk_ c:\excel\excelcbt\schedule.wk1
3 decomp a:\schedule.fm_ c:\excel\excelcbt\schedule.fmt
4 decomp a:\stocks.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\stocks.xls
4 decomp a:\summary.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\summary.xls
4 decomp a:\trend.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\trend.xls
4 decomp a:\vbstock.xl_ c:\excel\excelcbt\vbstock.xls
In addition to decompressing the CBT files, a line must be added to the
EXCEL5.INI file that points to the location of the CBT directory. To edit
the EXCEL5.INI file follow these steps:
- Open the EXCEL5.INI file, which is typically located in the
OS2\MSDOS\WINOS2 directory. (To edit this file use a text editor
such as Notepad or OS/2 System Editor.)
- In the [Microsoft Excel] section of the EXCEL5.INI file add the
following line:
CBTLOCATION= c:\excel\excelcbt
NOTE: CBTLOCATION is case sensitive.
- Save the EXCEL5.INI file and exit the text editor.
The CBT is now installed and configured.
To activate the CBT, start Microsoft Excel version 5.0. From the Help menu,
choose Quick Preview or Examples And Demos.
