Excel: Broken Cell Border with Copy Picture As Printed Option

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Copy Picture command to copy a cell that has an Automatic color border applied, and you choose the As Shown When Printed Appearance option, the pasted cell has a broken or dashed border, and does not display in color.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when your Window Text color in Microsoft Windows is a light color, such as Cyan. This behavior does not occur when you format a cell with a light color border.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do either of the following:

  • Use a PostScript printer driver.


  • -or-

  • To display a cell border as a solid line and in color when you use the Copy Picture command with the As Shown When Printed option, do either of the following before you use the Copy Picture command:

    • Format the cell border for a color other than Automatic.


    • -or-

    • Change your Window Text color in Windows to a darker color, such as Blue.




NOTE: The dashed border problem does not occur in Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, although the pasted object in this case still does not appear in color.
