XL5: Error 79 Printing to HP 4 Using Wide Latin Font

ID: Q115470

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you print a document to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series 4/4M printer, you may receive a service code error 79 if you are using a 10- point TrueType Wide Latin font.

CAUSE

This error occurs if you are using the HPPCL5E.DRV printer driver version 31.1.20 dated 11/1/93 and the following conditions are ALL true:

  • The worksheet margins are set to less than .75 inches

  • Scaling is set to 93%

  • The horizontal and vertical centering options are selected

NOTE: According to Hewlett-Packard, Service Code 79 refers to a bad font selection.

WORKAROUND

In order to print using the 10-point Wide Latin font, use a driver other than the HPPCL5E.DRV printer driver version 31.1.20. For example, change to the HP LaserJet Series IIIsi (version 2.1 or later). Note that this driver will not print at 600 dpi. Changing the Wide Latin font to a point size other than 10 may also allow you to print successfully to the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
