In the versions of Microsoft Excel that are listed at the beginning of this article, if you click Options on the Tools menu, click the Calculation tab, and click Manual, all open spreadsheets are recalculated when you open a text file. This behavior may cause unnecessary delays if you open large or complicated spreadsheets.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, close any open sheets that may be recalculated before you open the text file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel version 5.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

If you open a file in Microsoft Excel and calculation is set to automatic calculation, Microsoft Excel recalculates open workbooks. If calculation is set to manual calculation, Excel does not recalculate open workbooks.
