XL5: Secondary Mouse Button "Hangs" ChartWizard

ID: Q118402

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0, 5.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you select the ChartWizard button to create an embedded chart in Microsoft Excel, and you attempt to use the secondary mouse button (usually the right mouse button) to select an area in your document, the ChartWizard process will halt and the message "Drag in document to create a chart" will continue to display in the status bar.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the ChartWizard does not expect you to use the secondary mouse button to drag an area for the new embedded chart. When you attempt to do so, the worksheet pop-up menu will be displayed, and the ChartWizard will halt.

WORKAROUND

To reset the message in the status bar, do either of the following:

  • Run the ChartWizard again, and do not select cells with the secondary mouse button.

  • -or-

  • Exit Microsoft Excel (version 5.0 only).

NOTE: In Microsoft Excel version 4.x, if you create a new worksheet, the status bar message will be properly reset: you do not have to exit Microsoft Excel version 4.0 to correct the problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
