XL5: GP Fault Using Size Command with Chart Corners Selected

ID: Q118416

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if you select the corners on a chart, and you then choose the Size command (from the Format menu with Microsoft Excel 4.0 Menus displayed) you receive a general protection (GP) fault when you click on the chart.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Size command is available when you have Microsoft Excel 4.0 menus displayed, and you select the corners on a 3-D chart, such as a 3-D Column chart. This command should not be available in this situation. You can select the corners on a 3-D chart, and move them to change the elevation and rotation values of the 3-D view, but you cannot size the chart with the corners selected.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving a GP fault when you size a chart, do any of the following:

  • If you use the Size command, with the Microsoft Excel 4.0 menus displayed, select the Plot area before using this command.

  • -or-

  • Size the chart by selecting the chart Plot area, and dragging them in out, to increase or decrease the size of the chart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0c.
