XL5: GP Fault Using Find Dialog Box on Chart Sheet

ID: Q119569

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if you use the Find dialog box, while a chart sheet is active, you receive a general protection (GP) fault.

CAUSE

Normally, you cannot use the Find dialog box when a chart sheet is the active sheet in Microsoft Excel. However, if you choose the New Data command from the Insert menu on a chart sheet, select a worksheet tab, and then press CTRL+F, the Find dialog box appears. If you then enter text to search for, you receive a GP fault because the chart sheet is the active sheet.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving a GP fault, do not use the Find dialog box while the New Data dialog box is open to add data to a chart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0c.

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0c and 7.0, you cannot use the Find dialog box while the New Data dialog box is displayed. CTRL+F does not display the Find dialog box in this case, but instead causes your computer to beep.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that you cannot use the Find dialog box, either by choosing Find from the Edit menu, or by pressing CTRL+F, on a chart sheet, or a dialog sheet.
