XL5: Accounting Underline Overlaps Cell Data

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, accounting underlines will be displayed and printed higher in the cell than you may want. The accounting underline will overlap descenders (portions of characters that extend below the character's baseline).


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do the following:

  1. Remove the accounting underline format from the affected cell.


  2. Insert a new row just below the cell you want to format.


  3. In the new cell, a type a space (to enter a "blank" character).


  4. Format this row with a white top border and an accounting underline (single or double).


  5. Format row height for the cell to a height of 3.00.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0c.
