Configuring MacTCP for ODBC Use

ID: Q120254

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Query for the Macintosh, version 1.0

SUMMARY

MacTCP must be configured correctly in order to use Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) to access a SQL Server computer via Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

It is recommended that you use the latest release of MacTCP (version 2.04, as of 9/12/94).

MORE INFORMATION

In order for MacTCP to be configured correctly, the following must be true:

  • The correct port must be selected in the MacTCP.

    -and-

  • The Macintosh workstation must have a valid IP address.

To verify the currently selected port, open the MacTCP control panel by doing the following:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose the Control Panels folder.

  2. Double-click the MacTCP icon.

  3. In the top half of the MacTCP window, follow the appropriate procedure for your type of Ethernet connection:
    • If you are using the built-in Macintosh Ethernet port, verify that the Ethernet Built-in icon is selected.

    • If you are using an Ethernet card, verify that the icon with the title "Ethernet (x)" (where "x" is a number) is selected. If there is more than one icon matching the "Ethernet (x)" naming convention, ensure that the icon with the highest number is selected. For example, if there are two icons, "Ethernet (4)" and "Ethernet (3)", the "Ethernet (4)" icon should be selected.

To verify that the Macintosh workstation can communicate successfully with the SQL Server, use the MacTCP Ping program (included on the disks when you purchase MacTCP) to 'ping' the server address. If the workstation can communicate successfully, "success" messages will be shown in the status window, otherwise "timeout" or "failure" messages will be shown.
